Zee & Zaa Abayas is a small label run by two sisters, Zainab Fatima and Zahra Batool, in Multan, Pakistan. We started it because the abayas we wanted did not exist at a price our friends could actually pay. Why did two sisters start an abaya label?
We started Zee & Zaa because the abayas we wanted did not exist at a price our friends could actually pay. Between us we spent years buying pieces that were either beautiful and unaffordable, or affordable and badly cut. The imported ones looked right in a photo and hung wrong on a real body. The local ones fit, but the fabric went limp after three washes.
So we did the obvious thing and went to the karigars directly. One silhouette, cut properly, in fabric we could stand behind, at one flat price. That is still the whole business model.
Why is Zee & Zaa based in Multan?
Multan is where we live, and it is one of Pakistan's long-standing hand embroidery centres, with bazaars built around embroidered dresses and dupattas. The metallic thread work we use, tilla, is Kashmiri in origin as a technique, and the karigars who work it for us are here. We are specific about that because a craft claim on a page about craft has to be checkable.
Being in the same city as the workshop means we can walk in, look at a panel under daylight and say no. That is not possible when you are ordering containers from abroad, and it is the reason our reject rate never becomes your problem.
Why only Nida and crepe?
We use two fabrics because two are enough to cover a Pakistani year honestly. Nida is a soft matte weave that holds a shape, does not cling and comes out of a wash almost crease free. It is the fabric that behaves in Pakistani heat and Pakistani laundry.
Luxury flowy crepe is lighter, with a fine crinkled surface and a fluid fall, which is what gives the Aura umbrella flare its movement. We use crepe where drape matters and Nida where structure matters. There is a longer comparison on our fabric guide.
What does haya mean to Zee & Zaa?
Haya, حیا, is the value this label is built around, and we hold it as something you choose rather than something anyone imposes. We are a clothing brand, not a source of religious rulings, and we will never pretend otherwise.
Practically, it means we design for coverage that does not need constant adjusting: opaque fabric, real length, sleeves that stay where you put them, and a matching hijab in the same parcel so nothing has to be hunted for.
How does Zee & Zaa actually work?
