Fabric guide
Nida vs crepe abaya: which fabric is better?
Nida is the better everyday abaya fabric and crepe is the better occasion and hot weather fabric. Nida is a soft matte weave that holds its shape, resists creasing and survives frequent machine washing. Crepe is lighter, with a crinkled surface and a fluid fall, so it drapes and moves more but creases more easily too.
Almost every abaya sold in Pakistan is one of these two fabrics, and the label on a bazaar shelf rarely tells you which. The difference is not quality, it is behaviour. One holds a shape, the other pours.
Both fabrics at Zee & Zaa cost the same, Rs. 6,800 in sizes S to XL, so the choice is only about how you want the abaya to wear.

What is Nida fabric?
Nida is a soft matte polyester weave, medium weight, built to hold a shape without stiffness. It is the most common abaya fabric in the Gulf and in Pakistan for a simple reason: it hangs straight, it does not cling, and it comes out of the washing machine looking like it was ironed.
Under your hand it feels dry and smooth rather than slippery. Against light it is completely opaque, so a Nida abaya needs no slip underneath. That single property is why it dominates everyday wear.
- Holds a column silhouette instead of following the body
- Almost crease free straight off the line
- Takes hand embroidery and beadwork well, because the weave is stable
- Slightly warmer than crepe in still, humid air
What is crepe fabric?
Crepe is a lighter fabric with a fine crinkled surface created in the weave, which is what gives it that soft scattered light instead of a flat sheen. It is thinner than Nida and noticeably more fluid, so it swings when you walk and settles slowly.
That fluidity is the whole point of a flared abaya. The Aura umbrella flare works in crepe because the extra panels have something light enough to move. Cut the same shape in a heavy fabric and it hangs like a curtain.
- Lighter on the shoulders through a long day
- Moves air more freely, which matters most in coastal humidity
- Dries fast after a wash
- Creases more than Nida, though the crinkled surface hides most of it
What is the best abaya fabric for Pakistani summer?
Light crepe is the best abaya fabric for Pakistani summer, and the gap over Nida is widest in humid air. In Karachi or Hyderabad, where the problem is moisture rather than dry heat, a light crepe moves air across the skin and dries quickly, while a medium weight Nida holds warmth close.
In dry inland heat, Multan, Bahawalpur, Faisalabad or Rahim Yar Khan, the difference is smaller. Dry air pulls moisture off the skin regardless, so a lightweight Nida in a pale shade is perfectly comfortable and gives you a cleaner silhouette.
Shade matters as much as fabric here. Ivory and mocha absorb noticeably less sun than black, so a pale Nida can beat a black crepe outdoors at two in the afternoon.
Nida or crepe for Karachi humidity?
Choose crepe for Karachi humidity. Coastal air near saturation stops sweat evaporating, so comfort comes almost entirely from how freely a fabric passes air rather than from how thin it feels in the hand. Zee & Zaa crepe is the lighter of our two fabrics and dries fastest after a humid afternoon.
The same reasoning applies to Hyderabad, and to the monsoon weeks in Gujranwala and Sialkot when inland Punjab turns damp. Nida still has a place in those cities, but it belongs to December and January rather than to July.
One practical note for coastal wear. Damp air keeps a garment slightly moist for longer, so hang a crepe abaya open rather than folding it into a cupboard the same evening, or the crinkle relaxes unevenly.
Which fabric is warmer in winter?
Nida is the warmer of the two and it layers better. In Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Quetta, Abbottabad or Jhelum, a Nida abaya over a full sleeve top and a thermal holds heat in a way crepe cannot, because the weave is denser and less porous.
Crepe is not useless in winter, it just needs to be a layer rather than the layer. Worn over knitwear it still falls beautifully, and Quetta customers often keep one for indoor occasions where a coat comes off at the door.
Which fabric lasts longer?
Nida lasts longer under heavy rotation. If the abaya is going out four or five days a week and through the machine twice a week, Nida is the fabric that will still look right in a year. Its surface does not pill easily and it forgives a hot Pakistani wash cycle.
Crepe rewards lighter use. Worn two or three times a week and washed gently, it holds beautifully. Put it through daily wear and a weekly hot wash and the crinkle relaxes over time and the drape softens.
How do you care for each fabric?
Both wash on a gentle machine cycle at 30 degrees with a mild detergent, inside out, no bleach and no fabric softener. Softener coats the fibres and kills the matte finish on Nida and the crinkle on crepe.
Hang either one damp on a wide hanger. Nida dries almost flat and rarely needs an iron. Crepe needs no iron at all, and ironing it hard actually flattens the texture you paid for.
Anything with tilla embroidery or beadwork goes to hand wash or dry clean regardless of the base fabric. Metallic thread and a machine drum do not get along.
The verdict, by season and city
If you can only own one, own Nida. It covers more of the year, more of the country and more of your laundry habits.
If you already own one and are choosing a second, make it crepe, and make it a shade you would wear to a dawat.
- Karachi, Hyderabad, Gujranwala and Sialkot, humid: crepe first
- Multan, Bahawalpur, Faisalabad, Rahim Yar Khan, dry heat: light Nida in a pale shade
- Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Quetta, Abbottabad, Jhelum, cold: Nida first
- Lahore, both extremes: a light crepe for June and July, a Nida for December and January
- Nikkah, dawat, mehndi and Eid: crepe for movement, Nida when the piece carries heavy handwork
Common questions about abaya fabric
Is Nida or crepe better for everyday abaya wear?
Nida is better for everyday abaya wear. It holds its shape through a full day, comes out of a gentle machine wash almost crease free, and stands up to being worn four or five days a week. Crepe is lighter and drapes more, which suits occasions and hot weather, but it prefers a gentler rotation.
Does crepe abaya fabric wrinkle a lot?
Crepe wrinkles more than Nida, but far less than it looks like it should. The fine crinkle woven into the surface hides soft creases, and most of what remains falls out within an hour of wearing. Hang it damp on a wide hanger after washing and you will rarely need an iron at all.
Is Nida abaya fabric see through?
No. Premium Nida is fully opaque on its own and needs no slip underneath, which is one of the main reasons it became the standard abaya fabric. Lighter crepe can be sheer on its own, so every Zee & Zaa crepe piece is made opaque by construction before it ever goes in a parcel.
Which abaya fabric is best for a hot humid city like Karachi?
Light crepe is the best abaya fabric for a humid coastal city like Karachi. Humidity blocks evaporation, so the thinner and more open the fabric, the more comfortable the afternoon. Choose a pale shade over black for outdoor daytime wear, and keep heavy embroidery for evening events when the air has cooled.
Can I machine wash a Nida or crepe abaya?
Yes, both wash on a gentle machine cycle at 30 degrees, inside out, with mild detergent and no fabric softener. Hang it damp on a wide hanger rather than tumble drying. The one exception is embroidery: anything with tilla work or beadwork should be hand washed or dry cleaned to protect the metallic thread.
